Learning Objectives:

  • Diagnosis & Treatment Planning Establish diagnosis and treatment plans based on clinical and radiographic evaluation. Modify treatment plans based on patient factors and parent expectations. Determine which pediatric patients and treatment plans are appropriate for a general dentist and which require referral to a pediatric dentist.
  • Preventive Dentistry Understand available techniques, indications, and effectiveness of preventive therapies in pediatric dentistry. Conduct thorough discussions with parents and families about anticipatory guidance, oral hygiene, and the role of diet in prevention.
  • Minimally Invasive Procedures Understand the theory of different minimally invasive treatments for pediatric patients, including indications, contraindications, effectiveness, and the materials involved. Perform the techniques of minimally invasive procedures in pediatric dentistry.
  • Restorative Pediatric Dentistry Understand indications, contraindications, and prognostic factors involved in class II restorations, pulpotomies, and stainless steel crowns of primary teeth. Perform class II restorations, pulpotomies, and stainless steel crowns for primary teeth. Troubleshoot class II restorations, pulpotomies, and stainless steel crowns for primary teeth.
  • Orthodontic Considerations Understand indications, contraindications, technique, prognosis, and follow-up of space maintainers in children. Understand when and how to assess for emergent interceptive orthodontic needs – anterior/posterior crossbite, the ectopic eruption of molars and canines, missing teeth, supernumerary teeth Review instructions and tips for orthodontic appliance insertion, adjustment, design, and maintenance.
